Class of Service
The term Class of Service (CoS ) corresponds to the German term service class and has depending on the application ( Context) different meanings:
Class of Service on the LAN
With CoS, we describe a method for labeling and subsequent prioritization in IP -based networks, which are standardized by IEEE 802.1p.
CoS enables targeted prioritization, while explicit bandwidth guarantees or restrictions are furnished with Quality of Service ( QoS).
After the still widespread classification three specific class - of-service categories can be distinguished:
- Application Class 1: Language;
- Application Class 2: mission-critical data transfer, such as SAP, ERP or video conferencing;
- Application Class 3: geschäftsunkritische applications like e- mail and Web browsing.
Class of Service on the WAN
Many Multi-Protocol Label Switching ( MPLS) providers offer but also a more sophisticated Klassifiziering after the Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP ) method.
Class of Service in Telecommunications
The old term exchange authorization is rarely used in today's telecommunications networks. Today, telecommunications networks are used for a variety of services: voice, video, presence, instant messaging, chat.
CoS is a more generic term for various roles.
