Classification of indigenous peoples of the Americas

This list of North American Indian tribes, the principal North American confederations, nations, peoples, tribes and groups are listed, ordered by the North American culture areas. Not every entry is to be understood as an independent grouping. Partly it is artificially created top-level categories.

The indigenous groups are not meant to be absolute. Rather, they were always in flux; Nations were split, others joined a third and went therein. For many, there are several different names.
