Claude Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne

Claude George Bowes -Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne KG, KT, GCVO ( born March 14, 1855 in Chelsea, † November 7, 1944 at Glamis Castle) was a Scottish nobleman and grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II

Life

Claude George Bowes -Lyon was the son of Claude Bowes -Lyon, 13th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and his wife Frances Dora Smith. Since 1865, he bore the courtesy title of Lord Glamis, 1904 he succeeded his father as Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, this title belongs to the peerage of Scotland. From 1869 to 1872, he was educated at Eton College. After that, he was an officer in the Life Guards.

From 1904 was Bowes-Lyon, Lord Lieutenant of Angus, he resigned in 1936 but at the office, when his daughter became queen. During World War II he placed the ancestral castle of Glamis Castle ( supposedly oldest inhabited residence of Britain ) as a hospital available. As administrator of his estate, he was very interested in the prosperity of his tenants. Forestry Economically he made outstanding contributions to the cultivation of larch. He was a member of the Territorial Army and honorary colonel of a battalion of the Black Watch.

In 1937 the title of Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, he was again awarded, but now in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He therefore led since the title of 14th Earl of Strathmore and 1 and Kinghorne.

The Earl, who was very close to his family, is described as cautious and warm. He married in 1881 Lady Cecilia Nina Cavendish - Bentinck ( 1862-1938 ), a daughter of Charles William Frederick Cavendish - Bentinck ( a son of William Cavendish Bentinck - ), with whom he had the following children:
