Claude Brousson

Claude Brousson (* 1647 in Nîmes, † November 4, 1698 in Montpellier; pseudonym Paul Beausocle ) was a French Protestant theologian and martyr.

Life

Claude Brousson was born in 1647 in Nîmes. He was a lawyer in Castres and later in Castelnaudary and worked since 1679 at the parliament in Toulouse. He fought for the Huguenots, whose rights have been increasingly limited. Because of his work Brousson should be locked up in 1663, but fled to the Cevennes. From there he went to Lausanne and remained there for some time.

In 1685 it finally recognized the Huguenots in France, all rights from their churches and schools were destroyed, them the worship practice was also banned in private and they had to accept a different faith. Brousson first traveled through Germany to Berlin and finally through the Netherlands to Amsterdam in order to reach that Huguenots other countries inserting against the oppression of the French Huguenots.

Finally, he returned in July 1689 returned to France and in spite of all the danger he preached, even though all Huguenot minister of the country should be referenced. He always hid again in caves or forests, sometimes for several months, as they had put on him a bounty of 5000 livres. Friedrich Wilhelm Bautz described Broussons situation as follows: " [ ...] [ he ] was not a sure hour of his life [ ... ] ".

Brousson could travel to Lausanne in December 1693 and received in March of next year there his ordination. Then he traveled through the Netherlands and London, to support the Huguenots in other countries. In September 1695 he again returned to France and continued his work thereat, in September 1696, however, he found himself once again forced to flee and took refuge of Franche-Comté in Switzerland.

The following year he tried to impose Protestantism by the Peace of Rijswijk again, but remained his actions unsuccessful. Back to France, he went in August 1697, but was betrayed and arrested on October 18, 1698 in Béarn. On November 4, 1698, finally you strangled him publicly in Montpellier.

At the same place, on the Esplanade, yet another Protestant clergyman should be executed, including Matthias Desubas.
