Claude Kogan

Claude Kogan ( born 1919 in Paris, † 1959 Cho Oyu ) was a French mountaineer.

Life

Claude Kogan lived as a fashion illustrator in Nice. With her husband George Kogan († 1951), she made numerous ascents in the Alps and the Andes of South America.

From 1950 she took part in several major international expeditions ( Andes, Caucasus, Greenland, Himalayas ). You get several important first ascents. In the fall of 1954 she put on Cho Oyu with 7600 meters to the world altitude record for women.

In the fall of 1959, she led a woman expedition on Cho Oyu; on disposal of an unusually large avalanche they came together with Claudine van der Stratten, Ang Norbu Sherpa and Sherpa Chowang killed.

  • Well, 7135 m ( Himalaya, India), first ascent in 1952 together with Pierre Vittoz
  • Cho Oyu, 8188 meters ( Himalaya, Nepal / Tibet ) in 1954 attempted second ascent a few days after the first ascent; it turned Claude Kogan 7800 m with a new altitude record for women.
  • Yangra Kangri, 7422 m ( Ganesh Himal, Nepal / Tibet ) first ascent on October 24, 1955 along with Eric Guachet and Raymond Lambert.
