Claudio Fava

Giovanni Claudio Fava ( born April 15, 1957 in Catania ) is an Italian politician of the Democrats of the Sinistra (DS ), journalist and Mafia opponents. From 1999 to 2009 he was a member of the European Parliament.

Life

Claudio Fava is the son of 1984 murdered by the Mafia thriller author Giuseppe Fava. He put his 1980 university law degree and received in 1982 the ability to work of journalists. He has worked in this profession as a war correspondent, among others in Lebanon, Cambodia, El Salvador and Haiti. He received the Journalist Prize "Europe" for a report on Somalia during the fall of the Siad Barre regime.

He is the author of several books, which deal with the theme of mafia. He is also a director and writer for several television and film productions. His first major project in 1984 was the director for the TV series "I Siciliani ", for which his father had written the beginning of the script.

Claudio Fava wrote with Monica and Marco Tullio Giordana Zapelli the screenplay for the movie produced in 2000 " 100 steps ". The screenplay was honored with the Silver Lion at the International Film Festival in Venice in 2000. As early as 1994 Claudio Fava was known nationally by the television report " Cinque delitti imperfetti " about unsolved Mafia crimes. In 1998 he received the Solinas Prize for Best Screenplay for 100 steps (I cento passi ).

Policy

His first position as a politician he had from 1999 to 2001 as party secretary of the Democrats of the Sinistra (DS ) for the region of Sicily and is also a member there since his entering of the national leadership of his party. In 1991 he was elected to the Sicilian Regional Assembly, and from 1992 to 1994 Member of the Camera dei deputati ( Italian Chamber of Deputies ).

In the European elections of 1999 he was elected to the European Parliament, where he served until 2009. He was a member of the Group of the Party of European Socialists (PES ) and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and the Delegation for relations with the countries of the Andean Community.
