Gilbdrossel (Turdus grayi )

The Gilbdrossel (Turdus grayi ) or finishing choke is a songbird of the thrush family ( Turdidae ). Since 1977, the Gilbdrossel the national bird of Costa Rica. In Costa Rica it is called " yiguirro ".

Description

The clay-colored bird has a yellow beak and red-brown iris rings. The Gilbdrossel reaches a body length of 23 to 27 centimeters and a weight of 65-86 grams.

Habitat

The species occurs mainly in Costa Rica, Mexico, and northern Colombia. She lives in open terrain and sparse forests at altitudes of 2,450 meters.

Nutrition

The Gilbdrossel feeds mainly on fruits, insects and Stummelfüßern, but does not disdain even small lizards.

Reproduction

The female lays two to four eggs which are incubated for about two weeks until the chicks hatch.
