Clethraceae

Erlenblättrige Zimterle ( Clethra alnifolia )

The certificates Creator plants ( Clethraceae ) are a family of plants of the order of heather -like ( Ericales ), with only two genera and about 95 species.

Description

Types of Clethraceae are evergreen or deciduous woody plants: small trees or shrubs. The bark of the branches is at least as long as they are, hairy young. The alternate, spirally in tufts arranged at the ends of branches leaves are of medium size, usually toothed, leathery and herbaceous. The stomata are paracytisch and actinocytisch. Stipules absent.

The terminal, individually or together, standing in small groups, racemose inflorescences are usually many flowered. The small, hermaphroditic, flowers have radial symmetry a double perianth, and are usually fünfzählig. There are five (rarely six) sepals present. The five (rarely six) petals are fused at their base at most. There are two circles, each with five or rarely only two stamens present; they are usually adherent to the base of the petals. Three carpels are fused to a constant upper ( syncarp ) ovary. The style ends in a three-column or three-lobed stigma.

Are formed spherical to hemispherical, dreifächerige capsule fruits. The seeds can be winged.

Dissemination

The family has a mainly tropical or subtropical montane distribution. The total area is disjoint: In the Neotropics their area ranges from the southern United States through Mexico to about the equator in South America and Cuba. Another area is the eastern Asia and the Malay Archipelago. A type can be found on Madeira.

System

The Clethraceae family was first published in 1851 by Johann Friedrich Klotzsch in Linnaea, Volume 24 ( 1), p 12. It contained a long time only the genus. A new addition is the genus Purdiaea, which belonged to the family of Cyrillaceae before.

The Clethraceae family contains only two genera with about 95 species:

  • Zimterlen ( Clethra L. ), also called certificates preparers: With about 85 species in the Americas and Southeast Asia.
  • Purdiaea Planch. ( Syn: Costaea A.Rich, Schizocardia ACSM & Standlschmaus. .. ): With about 13 species. There are shrubs or small trees. Eleven species are native to Cuba and one each in Guatemala and Belize.
