Cliff

Cliff called in topographic name places with slopes or to rock walls.

Etymology

It is a Romance loanword which has its origin in the ways clivus / clevus (, slope ') has. Through its Middle Low German forms of the name is etymologically related to cliff, as in cliff coast, but can also be found the geomorphological and geological term cliff ( auserodierter ceilings rest ).

Examples and dissemination

Spellings are Klif, Klef, Kleff or Klev, in older notation as Clif, or Cleff Clef.

One example is the Kleff the Ruhr slope of Sybergs in Ardey mountains near Dortmund- Syburg over the Hengsteysee. Historically, the area designations may be passed on place names, as in the example of Kleve. The Saarland Klœf form can be found at the Cloef over the Saar loop at Orscholz.
