The Clinton House was originally built in the years 1828-1829 as a hotel of the upper class and the first office building in the city. With 150 hotel rooms, it was very much designed for a town with about 4,000 inhabitants at that time. Was named the building after DeWitt Clinton, who was 1817-1822 and again in 1824-1827 Governor of New York, at least four U.S. presidents talked to in the hotel, and numerous actors from the brief heyday of Ithaca as a center for film industry.

The neo-classical architectural style was popular in North America 1820-1860. The columns at the front and the huge windows and doors are typical features of this style.

In the present, numerous offices and an educational institution are housed in the building.
