Clive Brooke, Baron Brooke of Alverthorpe

Clive Brooke, Baron Brooke of Alverthorpe ( born June 21, 1942 in Alverthorpe ) is a British trade unionist, politician ( Labour Party ) and businessman.

Life and career

Brooke was born on June 21, 1942, the son of John Brooke and Mary Colbeck. He attended the Thornes House School, Wakefield.

From 1964 to 1982 he worked as an Assistant Secretary ( Assistant Secretary ) of the Inland Revenue Staff Federation union. From 1982 to 1988 he was the Deputy Secretary General, 1988-1995 Secretary-General.

Brooke was in 1988 a member of the House of Commons Speaker's Commission on Citizenship. From 1995 to 1997 he was a member of the Council of Churches for Britain and Ireland Enquiry into Unemployment and the Future of Work. From 1996 to 2005 he was a member of the Pensions Compensation Board.

1996 Brooke Joint General Secretary of Public Services Tax and Commerce Union and remained so until 1998. He was from 1989 to 1996 Member of the Board (General Council) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC ) and from 1993 to 1996 Member of the TUC Executive Committee. From 2001 to 2006 he was Director of Government partners NATS Limited. Brooke is a member of the Public and Commercial Services Union ( PCS), the successor to the union, which he headed. He is a member of the Trusteeship Council of the Community Service Volunteers ( CSV), and member of the Executive Board ( Council) at Action on Addiction.

He is patron ( patron ) of the Kenward Trust. He held his position even in the Sparrow Schools Foundation and EATA, which deals with working with addicts.

Membership in the House of Lords

Brooke was appointed Life peer as Baron Brooke of Alverthorpe, of Alverthorpe in the County of West Yorkshire on August 2, 1997. He sits on the Labour Party in the House of Lords. There was its official launch on 27 October 1997 with the support of Elizabeth Symons, Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean and Derek Gladwin, Gladwin of Clee Baron. His inaugural address was delivered there on 11 December 1997.

As subjects of political interest, he shall indicate on the side of the Upper House: employment and labor market policy, transport policy and the topics drugs and alcohol. As the state of interest he calls Sweden.

Brooke is a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. He served on the Joint Committee on House of Lords to reform. Brooke is a member of the All- Party Parliamentary Rugby League Group.

Brooke is regularly present at meeting days.

In 2000, he thanked personally a group of students from Imperial College London, who testified before a committee of the House of Lords on the subject of e-commerce and its implications on the legislation in the UK and in the European Union, and invited them to dinner; the case involved, this is the first time that students were consulted as experts.

In November 2009, Brooke was criticized when it became known that he had a house in London, but regularly referred overnight packages and allowances.

Private

Brooke married in 1967 Hopkin Lorna Roberts. During a television series of the BBC, he returned for the last episode in his hometown Alverthorpe, where he spent the first 21 years of his life. This program was broadcast for the first time in January 2011.
