Clive McCay

Clive Maine McCay ( born March 21, 1898 in Winamac, Indiana, † June 8, 1967 in Englewood ( Florida)) was an American biochemist and gerontologist.

Life

Clive McCay studied biochemistry at the University of Illinois where he received his BA in 1920. His master made ​​at Iowa State College in 1923, he in Iowa. At the University of California in 1925 he received his doctorate for Ph. D.. This was followed by studies in Yale ( at Lafayette Mendel ) and Oxford. In 1927 he became assistant professor of animal nutrition at Cornell University. In 1936, he became its professor of nutrition. In July 1927, he married Jeanette Beyer, who wrote a biography of him after his death. He remained until his retirement in 1962 at Cornell University in Ithaca. On June 8, 1967 McCay died after a long illness at his home in Englewood.

Work

Clive McCay is known primarily for his attempts to calorie restriction. He discovered that animals that received a significantly reduced number of calories for their food, lived significantly longer than their peers, the food in any quantity (ad libitum) were able to accommodate. First, he could this effect in rodents, later also demonstrate in dogs. McCay was the author or co-author of about 200 publications.
