Cloone

Cloone ( Irish: Cluain, dt, " meadow ", " Anger" ) is a town in County Leitrim in north central inland of the Republic of Ireland.

The place

Clooney is an anglicized form of the Irish name Cluain.

The town is near the regional road R201 in the south of the county of Leitrim, just northeast of Mohill and just south of Ballinamore. The population of Cloone is according to Census 2002 indicated by 600 people.

In Cloone are located in the old cemetery still the foundation and a few fragments of probably the only high cross in Leitrim.

On buildings from the early 19th century Cloone houses the remains of the old Catholic church of 1837 and the restored and re- fitted with a bell tower of a church of the Church of Ireland from the year 1822.

Clooney should not be confused with the slightly larger Cloonee in County Longford.
