Clopyralid is chlorinated derivative of picolinic acid from the group of pyridine carboxylic acids. As a herbicide, the active ingredient under the trademark Lontrel is known.
Synthesis
The synthesis of clopyralid is based on 2 -picoline, which is chlorinated photochemically. Subsequently, the trichloromethyl group is substituted with nitric acid by a carboxyl group.
Use
Clopyralid is used as an active ingredient in pesticides. It is a systemic and selective auxin herbicide. Clopyralid has been included with effect from May 1, 2007 in the list of permitted in the EU pesticides.
In Germany, Austria and Switzerland pesticides are approved with this drug.
