Cloud condensation nuclei

A condensation nucleus or condensation nucleus is required for a successful spontaneous condensation. This may be a slight contamination, such as a dust, salt or soot particles or, as for example in the cloud chamber, slightly ionized gas molecules.

Example: Some aerosols that possess certain chemical and physical properties, act as condensation nuclei in the atmosphere. Their presence is a prerequisite for the formation of clouds.
