Clough Castle

Clough Castle is a round Anglo- cambrische or Anglo-Norman Motte with a kidney-shaped bailey (English Bailey ) at Clough in County Down in Northern Ireland. It originated during the conquest of Northern Ireland, before or during the reign of King John ( 1199-1216 ). Today it is close to the roundabout, from which the A 25 and A 24.

In the nearly eight -meter-high artificial mound, originally stood a tower with a wooden palisade on a residential tower and a stone house and a hall were built in the 15th century in the periphery, but probably burned down because of their thatch soon. The moth is surrounded by about two meters deep moat. Probably Motte and bailey were connected by a wooden bridge.

Clough Castle used to protect access to Lecale Peninsula. John de Courcy and his successors made it together with south-west to Dundrum Castle to the military guard at the Dundrum Bay, which served as a supply port for the troops in the conquest of Ireland. Little is known about the history of the moth.
