Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus )

True herring (Clupea ) are a genus of the family herrings ( Clupeidae ).

These are fish that live in large flocks. Their main food are copepods, small crustaceans that live in the plankton.

The body is elongated, the abdominal rounded than the sprat. The scales on the belly are not keeled. An adipose fin is missing. The herring is not larger than 30 cm, flaked white and gleaming silver and green. The fresh fish is also called green herring.

The sardine ( Sardina pilchardus ( Bloch 1795) ) is shown by some authors under its original name Clupea pilchardus in this genus.
