Clyde De Vinna

Clyde De Vinna ( born July 13, 1890 in Sedalia, Missouri, † July 26, 1953 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American cinematographer, who in 1930 received the Oscar White Shadows in the Best Cinematography for the film.

Biography

De Vinna studied early 1910s at the University of Arkansas. He then trained as a cameraman. In 1915, he first worked as a cinematographer, but initially had only moderate success. This changed in 1925, when he worked at Fred Niblos Ben Hur along with René Guissart, Karl Struss and Percy Hilburn. He was then hired by WS Van Dyke, whose films he shot mostly outside a film studio. This kind of image composition brought De Vinna 1930 Oscar for the film White Shadows, which was shot entirely in Tahiti, a.

1933 ended the collaboration with Van Dyke. One of the last films of the two was Tarzan the Ape Man with Johnny Weissmuller in the title role. De Vinna took over yet two other Tarzan films of the camera work. Until 1942 he was mainly engaged for films with Wallace Beery in the lead role. After that, he was often involved until his death in 1953 only to low-budget productions.

Over his nearly 40 year career De Vinna was involved in over 100 film productions.
