Cnicin is an unsaturated sesquiterpene Dihydroxylacton which is esterified with a substituted acrylic acid.
Occurrence
Cnicin belongs to the group of germacranolides and is in higher concentration in the blessed thistle ( Cnicus benedictus ), or in panicles Knapweed (Centaurea stoebe ) formed.
The highest and lowest concentrations are found at the leaves ( 0.86 to 3.86 % Cnicin ) or in the trunk.
Effect
The effect of Cnicin is used in the context of phytotherapy. As an effective part in the blessed thistle, it stimulates gastric juice production and is effective against indigestion. Blessed thistle comes in the form of tea infusions or alcoholic extracts used.
Toxicology
