Coaming

The coaming ( Low German for threshold) or the cockpit rim is the upstanding rim of openings in the deck of ships and boats. The hatch coaming or the Lukenkumming ( for seagoing ships ), or the Denne tree ( as inland waterway vessels ) serves to stiffen the hull and provides a demarcation against water, which washed over the deck.

For smaller boats such as kayaks the coaming only a few centimeters high. The elastic spraycover clamped on him. Case of a ship which operates in the open sea, the coaming of the cargo hatches can be two meters and higher.
