Coast to Coast Walk

The Coast to Coast Walk ( German: Coast -to- Coast walk) is a long distance footpath, which passes through the north of England from the west to the east coast.

General

The trail is 300 km long (depending on the chosen alternatives ) and runs almost exactly east-west direction from St Bees on the Irish Sea to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea. He follows as closely as possible to the imaginary straight line connecting these two places. Its course crosses the English counties of Cumbria and North Yorkshire, and through three National Parks: Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors.

History

The route was developed by Alfred Wainwright, in 1974 published a book with a description of the route.

He himself considered the route only as one among many possibilities, existing paths or rights of way to connect to a total travel, and encourages the reader to idea to make their own alternatives.

Picking up on this idea is the Coast to Coast Walk until today (January 2008) no "official " trail and has no specific signposts or hiking characters, only few signs can be found. Therefore, it can be hiked only with the help of maps and route descriptions.

Sections of the road

Wainwright divides the route into 12 stages of varying length, with some lines are longer than 30 km and can be divided again. There is a general 13 to 15 days of walking for the entire route from.

Usually the way from West to East is migrated, with the weather in the back; However, the reverse direction has the advantage that the alpine scenery of the Lake District comes as the climax at the end.

From Ennerdale Bridge to the Shap road in the Lake District runs from Keld to Richmond in the Yorkshire Dales and Ingleby Cross to the finish in the North York Moors.

Importance

Since the book was published, the Coast to Coast Walk pleased not only with the local population growing in popularity. The varied route reflects the variety of landscapes of Northern England and also exerts on tourists - mainly those from English speaking countries - a strong attraction from.

2004 started off with the magazine " Country Walking " the Coast to Coast Walk at number 2 of the 50 best walks in the world.

Alternative routes

Inspired by Wainwright's idea more fully alternative routes have been developed and published, which run parallel to Wainwrightschen track, but their popularity could not reach.

Some alternative routes to sections that Wainwright had also shown, such as the route via Striding Edge, but are common today.
