Cobalt (III ) oxide is a chemical compound selected from the group consisting of oxides of cobalt. The pure form of the compound is not previously known.

Production and representation

By exposure to air, but faster with oxidizing agents such as chlorine, bromine or hydrogen, is produced in a basic solution of cobalt ( II) hydroxide brown cobalt (III) oxide hydrate Co2O3 · nH2O. For cobalt ( III ) hydroxide (III ) oxide can be extracted only under special conditions on Cobalthydroxidoxid CoO (OH ) of anhydrous cobalt, but before complete drainage already begins a splitting off of oxygen and thus the formation of other cobalt oxides such as Co3O4.

Properties

Cobalt ( III ) oxide is a gray - black solid which is practically insoluble in water. At a temperature above 895 ° C, it gives off oxygen, forming cobalt oxides such as Co3O4 and CoO.

Use

Cobalt- (III) -oxide, as well as the blue cobalt (II ) carbonate for coloring glass, porcelain and enamel used.
