The river flows first north and then northwest. After 52.8 km it flows about 6.4 km northwest of the Cobra Bald Mountain at Aberbaldie in the Macdonald River.

Earlier called Bald River Cobra Cobra Bald Creek and then also (partly ) St. Leonards Creek.

The river is over its whole length in the Local Government Area and Walcha in Vernon County.

The country on the Cobra Bald River is good grazing land. The river is regarded as one of the best fishing waters for trout. There is also a gold panning area in a conservation area at the Cobra Niangala Road and along the Bald River.
