Coconut Grove

Coconut Grove is a neighborhood in the south of Miami in Florida. Coconut Grove extends southeast of U.S. 1 from N. Prospect Ave as the southern boundary to the intersection of U.S. 1 and Brickell Avenue, the northern border. The western boundary is formed by the Le Jeune Road and the eastern boundary of Biscayne Bay. Coconut Grove was long regarded as the art district of Miami.

In Coconut Grove are a number of listed buildings that were listed on the National Register of Historic Places ( NRHP), including the early 20th century by Clinton MacKenzie and Phillippe Feliz Rebom in the Spanish Colonial Revival style built Plymouth Congregational Church, and the Villa Vizcaya, built 1914-1916 for James Deering (1859-1925), one of the founders of modern Miami. Some buildings on the estate of Villa Vizcaya were also designed by the architects Clinton MacKenzie ( 1872-1940 ). The Villa Vizcaya was donated by the heirs Deerings the Miami -Dade County. The Authority operates it today under the name of Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, an art-historical museum with a botanical garden.

History

Coconut Grove, originally written Cocoanut Grove and called by the locals as " The Grove ", was founded in 1825 and remained for 100 years independently. Opened in 1882, the Englishman Isabella and Charles Peacock first guest house / hotel. 1925 Coconut Grove was incorporated in the city of Miami. Opened in 1927, the Coconut Grove Playhouse. It was here in 1956, the U.S. premiere of Waiting for Godot instead.

In the 1930s and 1940s, Coconut Grove was the headquarters of Pan Am. Here started the flying boats to South America. The terminal is now used as City Hall. It is one of the few Art Deco buildings in Coconut Grove. In one of the Hanger was 1969 's notorious concert of The Doors instead.

1990 CocoWalk was opened. In this Lifestyle Center, there are some well-known shops and restaurants and several cinemas.

In May 2013 was started the construction work for two futuristic residential towers ( Grove at Grand Bay) by the Danish architect Bjarke Ingels.

" The Grove " is known for its immigrants from the Caribbean and its culture which is still reflected in various festivals. The most important festival is the " Coconut Grove Arts Festival ", held since 1964.

Coconut Grove is the two-storey building of the " Coconut Grove Housekeeper 's Club ", the oldest club for women in Florida. The club was founded in 1891 by Flora McFarlane. Visitors arrived by boat on the Miami River, in a special crib babies could be issued for the duration of the celebration.

Coconut Grove is three stations of the Miami -Dade Metrorail operated (Vizcaya, Coconut Grove, Douglas Road). In Coconut Grove live 31,000 people. The average household income (2010) is $ 72,509. It is significantly higher than that of the entire city of Miami ( $ 28,506 ).
