Coelius Sedulius

Caelius (also Coelius, both forms of the name uncertain) Sedulius († 450 ) was a Latin- Christian poet of the 5th century.

Sedulius came from southern Gaul or Italy. He studied philosophy before he was ordained priest.

He created numerous sacred poems and hymns that have been partially received in the church liturgy. So the verses 1-7 of his dreiundzwanzigstrophigen ABeCeDarius A solis ortus cardine were the Christmas hymn, the verses 8, 9, 11 and 13 ( Hostis Herod Impie ) to hymn on the Feast Epiphany. Martin Luther, the two texts were therefore familiar and appreciated them theologically high, she translated for congregational singing in German ( Christ praise we and What do you fürchtst, enemy Herod, very).

The main work of Sedulius applies the Paschale Carmen, which recounts in five books, the Gospels of the Nativity to the Ascension in hexameters.
