Coilover

A coilover kit or adjustable coil is an automobile or motorcycle chassis, which allows for adjustment of ground clearance means of threads on the strut.

On motorcycles, especially motocross or enduro machine, this is common on the rear wheel for decades, if not always smoothly.

In the 1990s, coilovers have found their way from motorsport to road cars. The target groups are in addition to sports riders especially the tuning lovers who prefer a minimum ground clearance. The ground clearance can be adjusted as necessary by threads on the strut, which, through locknuts individual settings. This allows the ride height to adapt to different tire diameters and also set an extremely low ground clearance to show or sporting purposes at meetings, shows or for photos. At the same time you can achieve a practical ground clearance in everyday life without much effort.

Systems for professional use, the want also make adjustments in the setup to adjust the ground clearance in addition, offer an adjustable train and compression damping and spring preload. This allows the pitch and roll behavior of the vehicle and the traction influence to reflect their own needs or the respective race track.

There are different variations of coilovers:

  • Front axle threaded rear axle not adjustable (Formula K Street Line, Lowtech G90)
  • Front axle threaded rear axle with thread, without biasing spring, has the advantage of better stability of suspension travel in the height adjustment ( Lowtech HiLOW 91/92/93, D2, K-Sport )
  • Front axle threaded rear axle with threaded (Formula K Racing Line, FK High Sport, KW Variant 1 "inox line", Lowtech G90)
  • Front axle with threaded and adjustable preload, rear axle with threaded (H & R thread, KW Variant 2 "inox line" )
  • Front axle with threaded and adjustable preload, rear axle with threaded and adjustable preload
  • Front and rear axle with threaded, adjustable preload, compression and rebound

( KW Variant 3, Bilstein PSS9 )

  • " Clubsport " coilover kit for the Nürburgring Nordschleife, tourists driving on racetracks, etc.
  • "Competition" racing coilovers for the national and international racing use
  • " Street Comfort " coilovers for a individual lowering ( 5 to 45 mm) at the best driving comfort
  • KW coilovers for quad Quads and ATVs ( All Terrain Vehicles ) with adjustable compression and rebound damping

The cost of coilovers are, depending on the application, between 200 € and 4,000 €.
