Colander

A colander or punch is used for straining liquids. This means to separate a mixture solids and liquids. The liquid flows through the holes, the solids remain in the strainer. Mostly it is used to separate cooked foods such as pasta or vegetables from the cooking water.

Strainers have, in contrast to seven major outlet openings so that turbidity and small particles are washed with the liquid through the openings. A common Colander has feet so you can put it directly into the sink. Sieves on the other hand are designed so that they can be hung or held over vessels for collecting liquids.
