Collapse of the Hotel New World

The Hotel New World was in Singapore at the junction of Serangoon Road and Owen Road. On 15 March 1986, the six- storey building collapsed due to a design flaw. 50 people were trapped under the rubble. 17 were rescued, 33 died.

Low-quality building materials and the nearby construction work at a subway tunnel could be excluded as causes. A review of the plans revealed that the responsible engineers had calculated the weight of the interior experience, building installations such as electricity and water, and the people correctly, but the dead weight of the building was omitted. The building was - built according to the rules of art - even to this devastating calculation errors. The collapse of the building was inevitable.
