Architecture

The reinforced concrete building was built in collaboration between the 2005 Kohl & Kohl Kohl: Fromme renamed architectural firm and the Parisian architect Jean Nouvel. It includes a bearing central core and the edge of the individual floors down pendulum supports. A 18 -meter-high radio mast forms the upper end of the divided into three different floor plan ranges tower.

The tower has a total of 43 levels, which can be achieved by six elevators with speeds of five meters per second.

The glass facade of the building was designed with a novel technique to achieve a reflective effect: Depending on the light oscillate in the screen printing process applied and stoved images in color and form. As motives of the Cologne Cathedral and the skyline of Cologne's Old Town were elected with cloudy sky.

Transmitter site

From the antenna mast on the top of the Cologne tower are three FM frequencies, mainly, aired for the northern city of Cologne parts. At 98.6 MHz with 400 watts 2 WDR Cologne and regional window to 87.6 MHz with 300 watts WDR 1LIVE. Until August 2, 2010 culture was spread with 30 watts on 89.9 MHz Radio Germany. This broadcast was abandoned after Germany radio culture has far-reaching frequency 96.5 MHz taken from BFBS Radio on the transmitter Langenberg. Despite the low transmission powers the frequencies due to the exposed antenna height in the northern parts of the city are to be received in sufficient quality. The KölnTurm replaces since 2002 the former FM station location on the nearby, lower Hansahochhaus at Hansa ring. Other FM transmitter sites in Cologne are the telecommunications office in Sternengasse, the TV tower Colonius and the radio tower in Pollonius Poll district.
