Colorado Party (Paraguay)

The Partido Colorado ( German Colorado Party, full name Asociación Nacional Republicana - Partido Colorado, ANR - PC), is a right-wing conservative political party in Paraguay.

It was founded on September 11, 1887 by General Bernardino Caballero and José Segundo Decoud under the name Partido Nacional Republicano as opposition to the Liberals and is a largely conservative party that emphasizes patriotism and nationalism. The Partido Colorado has 1,659,814 members (as of October 2007).

Support

The Partido Colorado is supported by large parts of the military and large landowners and could put on in the 1920s a large following in the rural areas. She was initially from 1887 to 1904 in power and was then replaced by the Liberal Revolution. In 1946 she presented under Higinio Morínigo together with the Partido Revolucionario Febrerista the government. From 1947 she was the sole ruling party again. 1954 coup against Alfredo Stroessner Federico Chaves and sat Tomás Romero Pereira as first President, in order then to take over this office on August 15, 1954 itself. 1959 founded by by purges sold into exile Colorado politicians MOPOCO ( Movimiento Popular Colorado). 1989 Stroessner was overthrown by General Andrés Rodríguez cavalry in a coup - but the government power remained firmly in the hands of the Colorado Party.

Current situation

Of 2002, led by Lino Oviedo wing Unión Nacional de Colorados Éticos split off and has since been under the name of Unión Nacional de Ciudadanos Éticos as an independent party.

A wing is the Movimiento Nacional de Reconstrucción Republicano (, Movement for the National Republican Reconstruction '), in which Alfredo Dominguez Stroessner, the grandson of Alfredo Stroessner, chaired.

2006 José A. Alderete was the chairman, he should remain in office until 2011.

In the election in April 2008, the presidential candidate Blanca Ovelar defeated her challenger Fernando Lugo and the Colorados lost the majority in parliament.

Since the September 16, 2008 Lilian Samaniego Graciela González is the party chairman.

After five years in opposition, the party returned with the victory of Horacio Cartes in the presidential election in 2013 to power.
