Features

The housing is 2.7 to 3.3 mm high and 1.3 to 1.5 mm wide. It is approximately cylindrical with up to 7 ½ weakly arched whorls. The first three turns to take rapid, the Apex is therefore somewhat flatter, the outlines of the following whorls are almost parallel. The suture is deep and the last whorl expanded noticeably. The aperture is ovate, much higher than wide, scarcely flattened at the top. The edge of the mouth is simple and fragile, and bent in the spindle area. The needle-shaped navel is therefore almost completely covered. The housing is dull green to brown horn and translucent. The shell is thin, the glossy finish shows only weak, irregular growth lines.

Similar Species

The housing of the High whorl snail is similar to the case of the toothless whorl snail ( Columella edentula ) very, but is slightly smaller and has fewer whorls.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs in the mountains of northern Scandinavia (up to the Arctic Circle ), North Russia ( 61-69 ° N ), in the Swiss Alps, rare in the Bavarian and Austrian Alps, in the Polish and Slovak Westkarpathen ( Tatra mountains, Mala Fatra, Great Fatra ) and in the Crimea before. Larisa A. Prozorova and Viktoria V. Berezhok vermeldeten the type 2004 of the Sakhalin Island ( Russian Far East ).

It prefers marshy meadows, and wet, subarctic forests. In the Alps and Carpathians it comes to alpine meadows on calcareous soil before. In Switzerland, the occurrence is limited to the Höhenbereiich of about 1000-2900 m.

Taxonomy

The taxon was described in 1830 by Georg von Martens Pupa Columella first time. He noted after the name Columella the name Benz. Benz was " mountain Raths - secretary " and collectors of the material. Although originates What information from him is not entirely clear, as von Martens the style name but attributed to him, Benz must apply well in the International Regulations for Zoological Nomenclature as an author of the taxon. Although F. Welter Schultes writes in AnimalBase that the name of the alleged author Benz does not appear in Correspondenzblatt. But this is not correct, because the table of contents Benz is listed with reference to the page 171 ( = Original description of Columella columella ).
