Colutea

Bubble bush ( Colutea arborescens )

The bubble shrubs ( Colutea ) are a genus of flowering plants in the subfamily of the Fabaceae ( Faboideae ) within the legume family ( Fabaceae ). The genus includes 26 species.

Description

Bubble shrubs are deciduous shrubs or small trees. Some species have thorns. The change-constant leaves are pinnate. The constant against leaflets are entire.

The racemose inflorescences contain small bracts. The zygomorphic flowers are fünfzählig. The five sepals are fused. Of the five calyx teeth, the two upper ones are slightly shorter. The petals are pale yellow to orange. Nine of the ten stamens are fused together. The stalked ovary contains many ovules. The curved style ends in a large scar. Characteristic of this genus are the bubble -like, papery legumes. They contain many seeds.

Dissemination

Most members of this genus are native to western and central Asia. A few have their original distribution area in China, the Mediterranean and North Africa.

The best known species of this genus is the fast-growing shrub bladder ( Colutea arborescens ), which is sometimes planted as an ornamental shrub.
