Comanchero

The Comancheros were primarily Mexican- Hispanic dealers in northern and central New Mexico, who contested their lives through trade with the nomadic tribes in northeastern New Mexico and western Texas. Comancheros were so called because the Comanches, in whose territory they acted as their best customers were considered. They traded manufactured goods (tools and material ), flour, tobacco, and bread for cattle and slaves by the Comanches.

History

Before the arrival of the Spaniards plundered Indian tribes, especially the Comanches, the eastern villages of the Pueblo Indians. They captured grain and slaves. This continued until Juan Bautista de Anza undertook several punitive expeditions against them; It began in 1779 and ended with a treaty in 1786 This agreement opened the way for the Comanchero trade.; before the trade had been limited to the markets at Taos or Pecos.
