Commodian

Commodian (Latin Commodianus ) was an early Christian poet, who may already be in the 3rd century AD, however, has probably lived in the 5th century AD only.

Origin

About its origin, there are different assumptions. His surname Gazaeus suggesting Palestine, its language is considered to be an indication of a North African origin. He describes himself as a Gentile converts, he may have been before his devotion to Christianity first Jewish proselyte.

Works

From Commodian two didactic poems are preserved; the Instructiones adversus Gentium and the Carmen Apologeticum. Both works have partly doctrinal and partly apologetic and propagandistic nature. They contain admonitions for a Christian living in everyday life as well as polemics against other faiths. Show Commodians works that he knew many Christian authors (eg, Augustine, Cyprian and Tertullian of Carthage ). He used a very popular language; his works are neither the hymns ( as established by Ambrose of Milan ), nor of Christian art gasket inspired by antique models to you,.
