The Great disc abdomen ( Liparis liparis ) is a species of the family of disc Bellies ( Liparidae ). It occurs around the British Isles, in the North and Baltic Sea, on the coast of Norway in the Barents Sea, in Novaya Zemlya, Bear Island, Spitzbergen, and on the south coast of Iceland in the northeastern Atlantic.

Features

The Big Slice belly is 15 cm long. The fish are tadpole with a large head and a rear tapering body. The characteristic for disc bellies and eponymous, formed from the pelvic fins suction disc is larger than the eye diameter. On each side of the head there are two nostrils. The long dorsal fin and the anal fin project beyond the tail fins stalk and partially overlap the rounded caudal fin. Large disc bellies are brownish in color and show her body sides numerous dark brown longitudinal stripes.

Way of life

The Great slice abdominal lives from shallow waters to depths of 300 meters. It feeds mainly on crustaceans, in addition also on small fish and Vielborstern. The fish proliferate in the winter months. A diameter of 1.5 mm having eggs are placed on the seabed. The larvae hatch after 6-8 weeks.
