Commonwealth Heritage List

The Commonwealth Heritage List contains places that are set by the Australian Government and which to document the development of Australia as a nation. The list includes, for example, places that were for national defense or the development of a nationwide communications system of meaning.

It may be telegraph stations, munitions factories, immigration center, lighthouses or government buildings.

The selection of places is made by the Ministry of Environment (Minister for the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts ). The procedure is laid down by law in the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 ( EPBC Act ).

Inclusion on the list entails the appropriate places under monument protection. To date, 335 sites have been added to the list.
