Communist Party of Nigeria

The Communist Party of Nigeria (abbreviation KPN ) is a communist party in Nigeria.

It was founded in November 1960 in Kano, mainly of cadres of the Nigerian Youth Congress. Originally the party was politically inspired by the Communist Party of Great Britain. However, their party constitution was based on the Party Constitution of the Communist Party of China from 1945.

Anyway, the party remained relatively isolated from the international relations between the Soviet Union and China, and had, for reasons of neutrality, neither with the Communist Party of the Soviet Union nor the Chinese Party CCP close links. As the Socialist Workers 'and Peasants' Party of Nigeria was formed in 1963, the CPN condemned the establishment as " the latest attempt in a long series of opportunistic and selfish actions that have done much to affect the socialist movement in Nigeria. "

The Communist Party of Nigeria was banned in 1966 by the Decree 34 of the regime of General Johnson Aguiyi - Ironsi. However, it was reopened in 2002.
