Community of the Chemin Neuf

The Chemin Neuf Community [ ʃəmɛ nœf ] (French:, Neuer Weg ') is a Charismatic movement within the Catholic Church with ecumenical appeal. It includes approximately 2,000 members in 30 countries.

Emergence and dissemination

The community created in 1973 from a prayer group in Lyon. Its founder and director of the Jesuit Father Laurent Fabre ( born 1934 in Lyon).

In Germany, the recognized association of the faithful has been working since 1992 and is a registered charity. He leads since 1994 the Prenzlauer Sacred Heart Church in Berlin. Since 2000 he is in the Catholic parish of St. Adalbert active in Berlin -Mitte and set up an ecumenical center Net for God. Currently a fundamental reconstruction of the building of St. Adalbert is scheduled for a college dorm.

The community lives since 2006 in Berlin- Lankwitz monastery, where she has held, inter alia, the pastoral care of the neighboring assisted living. Since the summer of 2007 Chemin Neuf acts in Bonn and stands there in the service of the Catholic Student Community (KHG ) to St. Remigius.

Objectives

A major concern of Chemin Neuf is the unity and reconciliation of Christians. The members of the community have different denominational backgrounds ( Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican reformed, Lutheran or Free Church ). Other objectives of the Community are evangelism and peace in the world.

In 2012, Chemin Neuf got the Ecumenical Prize of the Ecumenical Council Berlin Brandenburg.

Ecclesiastical and civil - legal recognition

Chemin Neuf was recognized in 1973 by the Lyon Archbishop Cardinal Alexandre -Charles Renard and 1984 under his successor Cardinal Albert Decourtray an association of the faithful. This canonical status allows the community to teach the Christian faith on behalf of the Church and to promote public worship ( canon 301.1 CIC). On 24 June 1992 established the Institute Chemin Neuf Cardinal Decourtray as a cleric institute of diocesan right for the priests and seminarians of the Community. On 14 September 2009, the Chemin Neuf Institute was recognized by Cardinal Franc Rode in the Vatican as a clerical religious institute of pontifical right.

The Chemin Neuf Community was recognized by the French government as a religious congregation (Decree of the Prime Minister of 23 July 1993). In 2009, the Chemin Neuf Community received papal recognition as full communion within the Catholic Church.

Controversy

In the 1990s, the community was accused of practicing cult-like practices and brainwashing. In 1998, the French anti-cult organization CCMM (Centre contre les manipulations mental; German: , center for mental manipulation ') Chemin Neuf in their " champagne Lexicon " on.

The former Lyon Archbishop Jean Balland (1934-1998) and his momentary cult commissioner of the French Episcopal Conference Jean Vernette (1929-2002) reported the charges as well as the Chemin Neuf back - founder Laurent Fabre.
