Free radio stations are independent, self-determined, open mass media engaged in non-commercial, grassroots broadcasting company, which deals critically with the existing social relations and in his own words to promote the freedom of expression.

History and Mission

Free radio stations are organized collectively and socially and often nonprofit, not motivated by profit and reject the financing from commercial advertising. They are based on the concept of counter-public. They see themselves as means of communication in the local and regional land use and support regional development.

Free radios see the non-commercial local radio, to which she and the open channels (these are referred to as community radio ) include, as a third pillar in the media landscape in addition to the public and commercially - private broadcasters interior. As a precursor of the independent radio stations are partly political pirate radio station.

In Germany free radios are active in twelve states and seven countries have been in media law basics for independent radio prevail. In three other states send free radio initiatives in open channels or in community radio. There are also several citizens' initiatives, inter alia, in Berlin, Brandenburg, Dresden and Constance who work there for the creation of Free Radios.

The Union non- commercialism oriented local radio stations ( UNIKOM ) [ 3 1] was founded in 1983.

Austria

Early 1990s, the forerunner of the Association of Free Radios Austria ( VFRÖ ) was founded. In VFRÖ [ 2 1] are 15 free radios and radio initiatives member. The VFRÖ operates the Cultural Broadcasting Archive an exchange platform for audio contributions. [ 2 2]

Germany

In November 1993, the Bundesverband Freier Radios (BFR ) was during a media conference in Hattingen and has since ( almost) a Congress and a Hörfestival (brain & Hertz) organized every year. In addition to these events, there were always the initiative on individual projects, took place for the other meetings. In Baden- Württemberg there's also the association of Free Society Funk ( AFF ) as the National Association for Community Radios.

The Bundesverband Freier Radios represents the interests of its members to the outside. The BFR organized the joint development ( media ) policy objectives of free radio stations and on program content and transmission forms. It promotes the exchange of information among member initiatives and other media projects. In addition, the BFR operates a website for the exchange of programs [ 1 1], whose contributions as a podcast [ 1 1] can be subscribed.

Worldwide interest group of independent radio stations is AMARC [ 4 1]
