Compagnie Africaine d'Aviation

Compagnie Africaine d'Aviation is a Congolese airline based in Kinshasa and based on the Ndjili airport.

History

The company was founded as a regional airline in June 1991 and operated from 1992 initially with a fleet of four Grumman Gulfstream I. By acquiring a Convair 580 in 1993 and another machine of the same type in 1995, the freight business was further expanded. The Einflottung of three used Antonov An-26 and three used Ilyushin Il -18 took place two years later.

2005 came with a McDonnell Douglas MD -82 the first jet to the CAA and was also the first aircraft suitable for medium distances. These also came a Boeing 727 and as of August 2008, a Douglas DC-8- 62 cargo flights are used.

All airlines in the Democratic Republic of Congo are on the list of the operating bans for the airspace of the European Union since May 2006. Thus, it is also forbidden for CAA to carry out flights in the European Union.

A first Airbus A320 -211 was acquired in May 2010 by Nouvelair. The aircraft has 180 seats in the Economy Class. This CAA is the first airline in Central Africa, has been using this type of aircraft. A second A320 -200 was commissioned on 16 June 2011 in Kinshasa in reception. These aircraft are used on the routes from Kinshasa to Lubumbashi, Mbuji -Mayi and Goma. Objectives

Flew are currently around 15 domestic destinations, with the hub located at the Kinshasa airport. With a weekly flight to Entebbe in July 2010, there is also a first international goal. There is also a collaboration with the Congolese Air Kasai, making connecting flights in more remote regions of the country can be offered.

Incidents

After Hewa Bora Airways Flight 952 in July 2011, CAA is the only existing airline of the country, which still had to report no fatalities due to accidents.

  • 29 November 2009 shot a MD -82 (Reg. 9V CAB) on the Goma airport in the botched braking on the runway also and suffered severe damage in the collision with cooled lava. Passengers and crew remained there unharmed and were able to leave the heavily damaged aircraft via the emergency slides. However, the machine had to be written off as a total loss. At the same place April 25 was already a DC 9-52 of Hewa Bora Airways crashed in 2008.
  • In another incident on January 2, 2010, a Boeing 727-200 (Reg. 9Q - CAA) slipped in heavy rain in Kinshasa of the runway. After the previous launch from the Kinshasa airport were problems with the hydraulic system of the aircraft. As the crew suspected a negative effect on the braking system, the crew returned to Kinshasa Ndjili airport. back, as it has a longer runway than Kananga. After touchdown on runway 06 failed the brakes of Boeing and with collapse of the left main landing gear, the aircraft slid off the track. As part of the investigation into the circumstances of the accident, it turned out that the machine had only three days earlier suffered a Tailstrike in Goma and the affected sections, although tested but had not been replaced. The aircraft was written off as a total loss, the crew was unharmed.
  • On March 4, 2013, 36 people die in a crash landing. Four of the 40 inmates of the coming of Lodja machine survive the crash of the Fokker 50 in Goma.
