Complexo do Alemão

The Complexo do Alemão ( German: " area of ​​the Germans" ) is a large favela in Rio de Janeiro, which consists of 25 settlements. The name derives from the original owner of a plantation within the favela today, the Pole Leonard Kaczmarkiewicz, which was mistaken for a German.

Complexo do Alemão is located in close proximity to the favela Vila Cruzeiro.

The favela was raided in November 2010 by police and military, and to be occupied by units of the Unidades de Polícia Pacifica Dora permanently to break the domination of the Comando Vermelho.

On July 7, 2011, a gondola began operations. 152 gondolas travel between the six stations Bonsucesso, Morro do Adeus, Morro da Baiana, Morro do Alemão, Itararé and Palmeiras.
