Compostela Group of Universities

The Compostela Group of Universities is a European network of university associations, founded in 1993. Meanwhile belong to seventy European Universities this group. The aim of this association is to promote collaboration between researchers of different universities.

History

In 1993, the University of Santiago de Compostela made ​​contacts with other universities that are geographically located at St. James. The main objective was to create a university network, which should encourage cooperation with other universities and help to protect the cultural and historical heritage, which has established itself around the pilgrimage.

At 2 to 4 September 1993, the representatives of 57 European universities gathered in Santiago to jointly define the policies and objectives of the Association. It was three essential points:

  • Strengthening communication between the university members
  • Organisation of events to important European issues
  • Promoting mobility to disseminate the cultures and languages ​​of Europe.

A commission composed is made ​​up of representatives of universities in Valladolid, Liège, Nantes, Göttingen, Minho, Jaume I and Santiago de Compostela, laid down the definitive principles of group Compostela University. At the constitutional meeting of 2nd - 3rd September 1994 in University of Santiago de Compostela, the principles have been adopted.

International Award: Compostela - Xunta de Galicia prize

In 1996, the University signed Compostela Group and the Ministry of Culture, Social Communication and Tourism of the Galician regional government ( Xunta de Galicia ) the agreement for the international award " Compostela - Xunta de Galicia prize". It is a prize, which is awarded annually to a person or institution that has demonstrated excellence through its commitment to promoting the common European ideal and the preservation of cultural heritage. The jury will be composed of the President of the Galician Regional Government (Chair ) and the Minister of Culture, Minister of Education and Director of the University of Galician regional government. The University of Compostela Group is represented by the President and three rectors of member universities. The rectors are determined annually by the General Council. Candidates for the award are nominated either by the Galician Government, or of the CGU universities. The winner gets a gold medal in the form of a shell ( the symbol of the pilgrimage to Santiago), as well as financial support.
