Concerto for Orchestra

Concerto for Orchestra is the title of various musical works. Although a concert is usually a piece of music for one or more solo instruments, which are compared with the orchestra, several composers have written works entitled Concerto for Orchestra, which appears at first glance to be a contradiction in itself. This title is usually chosen to emphasize the soloist and virtuoso treatment of orchestral instruments.

The term appeared only in the 20th century, when it held the composer is important to give each instrument an obligatory function for the first time with Hindemith (1925 ) on. So you can not say a Concerto for Orchestra is a symphony with a different name, it may even chamber music character ( cf. Arnold Schoenberg Chamber Symphony op 9).

A related genus musical work in the Baroque and Classical periods, the Sinfonia Concertante.

The most famous Concerto for Orchestra is that of Béla Bartók (1943 ), although the title has been variously used prior to this work.
