Confort

Confort is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Confort is located at 550 m above sea level, about five kilometers north of the town of Bellegarde -sur -Valserine (air line). The village is located in the French Jura on a slope shoulder in the Central Valley of Valserine which opens here against the Rhône valley down over the mouth of the Semine, at the western foot of the Grand Cret d' Eau.

The area of ​​11.66 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the high Jura. The western boundary runs along the Valserine that here in a 100 m cut into the environment erosion valley ( Gorges de la Valserine ) from north to south flows. The valley is surrounded by sheer, crisscrossed by ledges of rock slopes on both sides. From the river, the municipality's area extends eastward to the flat slope of shoulder Confort. This is followed by the wooded steep slopes of the Jura ridge connects. The area extends to the height of the Montagne du Cret ( 1140 m ) and on the broad ridge of the Grand Cret d' Eau, on whose summit with 1621 m the highest peak of Confort is achieved. Above 1,400 m there is an extensive mountain pastures. The territory of Confort is part of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut- Jura.

At Confort also includes the hamlet of La Mulaz (560 m ) on the slope shoulder north of the village and several villages. Neighboring communities of Confort are Chézery -Forens in the north, Farges and Collonges in the east, the south and Lancrans Châtillon -en- Michaille and Montanges in the West.

History

Is first mentioned Confort in 1337 under the name Castra Balonis et Gran Disco Fort. From 1553 the present name is Confort and handed down from 1650 Grand Confort. The place name comes from the Old French word confort back (help) and refers to a fortified place, granted the protection. Already in the 12th century, there were at Confort a country chapel, which was dedicated to St. Roland and in the Middle Ages was an important pilgrimage destination. In the 13th century it belonged to the rule Thoire -Villars. Confort belonged to the municipality along with Vanchy Lancrans, which extended over the entire eastern flank of the Valserine at Bellegarde. It was not until 1858 the place was separated and collected for independent community.

Attractions

The village church of Confort was built in the 19th century. From a medieval castle ruins are preserved. At La Mulaz is the Pont des Pierres, Built in 1954, a concrete arch bridge that spans the gorge of Valserine at a height of about 60 m.

With 539 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Confort is one of the small communities of the department of Ain. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century, a significant population increase has been recorded since the early 1960s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Confort was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture and forestry village. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses. Many working population commuters who engage in the larger towns in the area and mainly in Bellegarde -sur -Valserine their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares of the secondary road D991 which leads from Bellegarde- sur -Valserine after Mijoux. Further road links exist with Montanges and the winter Menthières. The nearest links to the A40 motorway is located at a distance of around 11 km.
