Congress for Democracy and Progress

The Congrès pour la démocratie et le progrès (CDP ) is a party in Burkina Faso. It is since 1987 the dominant party of the West African country. Aligned Marxist Originally, the CDP now known as social democratic.

History

The CDP was established in October 1987 after the coup against Sankara under the name Organisation pour la démocratie - Mouvement populaire du travail, ODP / MT, by the new President Blaise Compaoré. In the same year it merged with twelve smaller parties Parti pour la démocratie et le progrès. Got its name, the CDP at the Party Congress on 5 February 1996. Officially, it was at this Congress a founding congress of a new party, which emerged from the merger of 13 different parties. The CDP dominates the Burkinabe politics; he has an absolute majority in parliament and represents the President ( Blaise Compaoré ) and the Prime Minister ( Luc Adolphe Tiao - ).

Current situation and strength of the party

In the combined parliamentary and municipal elections of 2 December 2012, the CDP has maintained its strong position, although he has proportionally lost seats. It provides new 70 of 127 MPs in the National Assembly of Burkina Faso, which corresponds to a seat share of around 55%. In the legislative period 2007-2012, the CDP still had 72 out of 111 seats ( almost 65 %).

Also strongly the CDP is represented in the executive community. 12'340 18'645 of total municipal councils belong to the CDP. This corresponds to a share of around 66%.
