Conquest-class cruise ship

Type of ship Carnival Conquest

The Conquest class is a series of five post -Panamax cruise ships, which were built on the Italian shipyard Fincantieri for the shipping company Carnival Cruise Lines. The shipping company invested in the years 2002 to 2005 approximately two billion dollars in the development and construction of the ships, which are derived from the design of the "Triumph" class, but around 18 m ( 59.1 feet) and extended by a further Restaurants have been added.

In view of the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, the naming of the ships was based on patriotic oriented themes (" conquest ", " honor ", " courage ", " independence ", " freedom ").

All ships are in the Caribbean on the go, the Carnival Glory also goes to Canada and New England between spring and autumn. The Carnival Valor is stationed from February 2013 in San Juan (Puerto Rico) for the southern Caribbean, until then Miami is her home port. The Carnival Conquest will use from November 2013 Miami instead Galveston port base.

Machinery and drive

The ships of the Conquest class are equipped with diesel-electric machinery. First came four Wärtsilä - N.S.D. Built under license 16-cylinder and two 12 - cylinder diesel engines of Sulzer series ZA40S used. They develop a cylinder capacity of 720 kW ( 980 hp) and drive generators from ABB to supply the ship with electricity.

The drive of the two fixed-pitch propellers via wave systems with three-phase synchronous motors.

The construction of the Carnival Liberty, which was laid in March 2004 on Kiel, came six V-12 cylinder engines of the newly developed 46 series of the Finnish manufacturer Wärtsilä used. The motors are equipped with common- rail injection and two turbochargers. At a speed of 514/min the cylinder capacity 1,050 kW (approx. 1,430 hp) is. Despite reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions, the performance of the machinery rose compared to the previous plant by about 20 %. This means that the conditions for future modernizations were created on the technical side. The motors each driving a three-phase generator with a capacity of 14,000 kVA. These generator sets supply the entire ship with electrical energy. The modernization required the extensive redesign of the electrical systems.

In the conventionally designed drive system with shaft, fixed propeller, rudder and propeller engines previously used by ABB has been replaced by new developments of the French company Alstom. The new engines run at up to 149/min and develop a power of 20 MW.
