Constitutional Democratic Rally

The Constitutional Democratic collection (Arabic التجمع الدستوري الديمقراطي at- Tajammu ' ad - Dusturi ad Dīmuqrāṭī, French Rassemblement constitutionnel démocratique abbreviation RCD) was founded in 1920 as Destur Party political party in Tunisia, which on the February 27th, 1988 assumed current name.

Party chairman was former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. She had an authoritarian appearance and was set largely secular. She was up to her exclusion on January 17, 2011 a full member of the Socialist International.

History and Politics

She was a direct descendant of two older parties: The Neo - Destur Party - founded on March 2, 1934 by Habib Bourguiba - and the Socialist Destour party that was given this name by association with the party, founded in 1920 Destur 1964. Under these various names was the party in the country since independence from the French colonial power in 1956 in power.

She held in January 2011, at the time of the fall of Ben Ali, 152 of the 189 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. 37 seats were intended for the opposition. The RCD set alone all the members of the second chamber of parliament, the council chamber ( Chambre des conseillers ); this was introduced in 2005.

On 6 February 2011, the Ministry of Interior of the transitional government of Tunisia announced the dissolution of the party. This was finally definitively performed by court order on March 9.
