Contemporary Fantasy

Contemporary Fantasy or Contemporary Fantasy ( rarely Fantasy / Fantastik ) is a subgenre of fantasy literature.

Contemporary Fantasy referred to texts from the field of fantasy literature, in which the real world is broken by fantastic elements. This usually happens as an amalgamation of everyday life of the present with the ancient and modern myths, such as integration of supernatural powers and mythical creatures that come from the repertoire of fantasy. Even the appearance of gods and their messengers is not uncommon; Examples are Douglas Adams ' The Long Dark afternoon tea of the soul and Neil Gaiman's American Gods.

Demarcation

The Contemporary Fantasy differs from the Historical Fantasy ( historical fantasy ) not only by the presence of reference. Contemporary Fantasy contains a maximum of the period from the late 19th century to today. However, the focus of most novels is set in a modern contemporary setting, which often comes from the urban area, with its fast pace and its conflicts. In contrast, the Historical Fantasy is set in a time long ago, in the myths of real meaning and gods and magicians a real power has yet been attributed yet. In works of our contemporary fantasy it is presented as a waning and conceived by most people hardly noticed power. Helmut W. Pesch wrote: This kind of fantasy play in our reality, in which (sic) the magic breaks - but in a way that she is considered to be compatible with it.

Occasionally not merge the real and fantastic world but each other but only touching, such as when the hero passes through magical gates or rituals in a fantasy world, as in the Chronicle of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever by Stephen R. Donaldson, or in Michael Ende's Neverending Story. These stories and novels in which a fantastic world completely independently exists alongside the everyday world are, by some literary scholars and critics, not the actual Contemporary Fantasy attributed. Here The modern world is only the starting point of a frame story in which the hero of a story enters a fantasy world with independent locales, characters, and rules that do not affect the everyday world.

Urban Fantasy

A common form of Contemporary Fantasy game is the urban fantasy in which that takes place "real" action in urban areas. Often both terms, not least because of the difficult distinction, also used synonymously.
