Cooma

Cooma is a town in southern New South Wales in Australia. It is located 115 km south of the capital Canberra on the Murrumbidgee River and 397 km south-west of Sydney. Cooma is the gateway to the Snowy Mountains and can be reached via the Monaro Highway and the Snowy Mountains Highway. The name comes from the Aboriginal Cooma, meaning big lake ( Great Lake) or open country ( open country ).

History

Cooma was appointed in 1879 to the city. By train Cooma was reached in 1889 from Sydney. This railway line was closed in 1986. 1949 settled the company Snowy Mountains Hydro - system, created by Cooma jobs and grew continuously.

Cooma is visited frequently in the winter months of winter sport tourists who go towards the Snowy Mountains.

Village

In Cooma there is a secondary school, the Monaro High School and several elementary schools, several radio stations and two newspapers. Cooma has an airport, the Cooma - Snowy Mountains Airport, which is 15 kilometers away. Cooma can be reached by bus from Canberra and from the Bega Valley.
