Coptic Catholic Church

The Coptic Catholic Church is a Uniate with the Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox faith community of some 197,000 believers in Egypt and a small diaspora. Their leader is the Coptic Catholic Patriarch of Alexandria, based in Cairo, currently patriarch Ibrahim Isaac Sidrak. In worship they used the Coptic rite. The Coptic Catholic Cathedral of Cairo ( Our Lady of Egypt) is located in the modern district of Nasr City ( Mohamed dEab Street). During the visit of Pope John Paul II in Egypt in 2000, an ecumenical meeting took place there. On 12 March 2013, the enthronement of the new Patriarch took place there; historically it was the embrace of Patriarch Ibrahim with the Coptic Pope Tawadros.

To distinguish it from the Coptic Church united with Rome is the much larger Eastern Orthodox Coptic Church, which traces its founding to the evangelist Mark.

When Einigungsbestrebung of Konziles of Florence took place on February 4, 1442 between the Roman Catholic Church and the Coptic Church to conclude a Treaty on European Union, however, which at first had no consequences. Only in 1741, the Coptic bishop of Jerusalem, Amba Athanasius and about 2,000 believers joined with Rome under Pope Benedict XIV

After an unsuccessful attempt in 1824 under Pope Leo XII. was the Alexandrian Patriarchate of the Coptic Catholic Church by Pope Leo XIII. 1895 rebuilt. It remained dependent on the support of Rome and the West. First Patriarch in 1899 Georges Macaire ( 1866-1921 ) under the name Kyrillos II [ sic], but had to resign in 1908. Due to internal problems of the church chair of the Patriarch 1908-1927 remained unoccupied. After a further trial period of 20 years, the Patriarchate was finally built in 1947. As a sign of unity with the Roman Pontiff, the Coptic Catholic Patriarch of Alexandria also cardinals and pope thus eligible to vote. So who resigned for health reasons Old Patriarch Antonios Naguib was cardinal in the conclave of the election in 2013, while at the same time his successor was enthroned.
